Certificate in Peer Education and Coaching

Program Overview

The UCSF Fresno Internal Medicine Residency Certificate in Peer Education and Coaching is designed to cultivate supportive mentorship and essential teaching skills among our senior residents. This selective program offers a structured opportunity for advanced residents to make significant contributions to the development of our incoming interns, with a specific focus on core clinical skills, including oral presentation, clinical data gathering, workflow efficiency, and clinical reasoning. Coaches who successfully complete the required training and coaching commitments are eligible to receive the Certificate of Completion in Peer Education and Coaching.

Target Audience

UCSF Fresno Internal Medicine Senior Residents are eligible for the Peer Coaching Program.  Training is completed in the spring of their PGY2 year, and residents serve as coaches during their PGY3 year.

Purpose of the Certificate

This certificate serves as a formal recognition of the coach's dedication to medical education, mentorship, and professional development. It signifies that the recipient has not only dedicated their time but has also been formally trained and assessed in core coaching competencies related to high-yield clinical skills. This certifies that the recipient has completed structured training and demonstrated proficiency in evidence-based coaching and education principles. 

Curriculum and Training Focus

The educational curriculum is designed to impart effective coaching strategies specifically applicable to the needs of internal medicine interns in training. Training focuses on the following core clinical skills:

  1. General Coaching Strategies: Coaches learn about the difference between a coach and a teacher, psychological safety, and provide a framework for coaching.
  2. Effective Oral Presentation: Coaching techniques to improve the structure, clarity, and conciseness of case presentations.
  3. Data-Gathering, Workflow, and Efficiency: Strategies for enhancing clinical workflow, optimizing chart review, and effective time management.
  4. Foundational Clinical Reasoning: Methods for guiding interns through hypothesis generation, problem representation, differential diagnoses, and integration of reasoning in oral presentations.

Certificate Completion Criteria

To be awarded the UCSF Fresno Internal Medicine Residency Certificate in Peer Education and Coaching, the participant must successfully fulfill the following mandatory completion criteria during the designated program term:

Minimum Standard for Completion

I. Structured Training Hours

Completion of the required didactic and skills-based workshops, with specific modules covering coaching for the core clinical focus areas.

A minimum of 4 hours of faculty-led training.

II. Core Competency Assessment

Successful demonstration of coaching and feedback skills through a formally evaluated skills assessment (e.g., observed standardized coaching encounter or simulation).

Pass a formal skills assessment.

III. Near-Peer Coaching Delivery

Documentation of one-on-one coaching sessions delivered to assigned interns, focused on improving performance in the core curriculum areas.

A minimum of 4 hours of documented coaching sessions completed.

IV. Program Engagement

Maintenance of continuous professional development and quality assurance through attendance at program debriefs and check-in sessions.

Attendance at a minimum of 50% of scheduled quarterly check-in meetings.
