Research Activities

At UCSF Fresno, all residents and fellows in training are also involved in research activities, including clinical, translational, and population-based research. UCSF Fresno faculty are engaged in research in multiple specialties across all clinical departments. Quality Improvement projects are also underway, and both research and Q.I. projects are presented at local, regional, and national conferences annually.

Clinical Trials

Dozens of clinical trials, both industry and government-sponsored, are being conducted at UCSF Fresno. Clinical trials provide San Joaquin Valley patients access to cutting-edge therapies for a range of illnesses, including stroke, heart failure, diabetes, pneumonia, influenza, Valley Fever, pulmonary hypertension, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cancers of the lungs, blood, lymphatics, breast, and bladder, as well as many other diseases. Research Affiliation Agreement

The UCSF Fresno Clinical Research Center establishes formal research affiliation agreements with community partners to foster collaboration and expand research opportunities. These agreements outline roles, responsibilities, and expectations while promoting strong partnerships, facilitating access to essential resources, and ensuring that research activities align with institutional policies, regulatory requirements, and community standards.

United Health Centers

To conduct research at a United Health Centers location, investigators must download and complete the attached form. Completion and submission of this form initiates the required review and approval process and helps ensure that all research activities comply with UHC policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Step-by-Step Guide for Approval of Scholarly Activity at UHC

If you are planning to conduct scholarly activity, such as research or quality improvement projects, at UHC sites, follow the steps below to ensure proper approval:


Step 1: Download the UHC Summary Request Form


Step 2: Complete the Request Form

  • Fill out all required sections of the form, ensure all details are accurate and complete.

Step 3: Attach Supporting Documents

  • Include any relevant supporting materials, such as:
    • Study protocol or project plan
    • IRB approval or exemption documentation (if applicable)
    • Budget outline (if applicable)
    • Letters of support, if required

Step 4: Submit the Form to Applicable Parties

  • Submit the completed Request Form and supporting documents to the following parties:
    • Clinical Research Center (CRC): Send the form to the designated CRC contact email [email protected]
    • UHC Site Leadership: Provide a copy of the request form to the relevant UHC site leadership for review.
    • Other Required Stakeholders: If specified, share the form with additional stakeholders (e.g., Quality Improvement teams, Department Chairs, or Research Committees).

Step 5: Await Review and Approval

  • The submitted request will undergo review by the CRC and UHC leadership.
  • You may be contacted for clarification, additional information, or modifications to the proposal.

Step 6: Receive Approval Notification

  • Once the review process is complete, you will receive an official notification of approval or feedback for revisions.
  • If approved, you may proceed with initiating your scholarly activity at the UHC site(s) (ensure that all other approvals, such as IRB are also obtained prior to starting scholarly activities).

Step 7: Conduct Scholarly Activity

  • Adhere to the approved protocol and UHC guidelines while conducting your project.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, ethical, and institutional requirements.

Step 8: Submit Progress and Final Reports

  • Provide periodic updates or progress reports as requested by UHC or CRC.
  • Submit a final report summarizing your findings, outcomes, and contributions at the conclusion of the project.
