Research

We believe that scholarship and research are an important aspect of any good Internal Medicine residency. Our scholarly works focus on the unique pathologies and populations that we serve in the San Joaquin Valley and are supported through the UCSF Fresno Center for Clinical Studies. Our goal is to train residents in both clinical medicine and the scientific basis of internal medicine. We have a broad range of research activities in our department, supported both by industry and by the NIH. Residents work throughout residency with a research mentor and complete one or more scholarly projects.

Many of our residents present their projects in various regional and national meetings.  We provide residents with travel stipends and additional professional time to support them when they showcase their work at regional and national meetings. The UCSF Fresno residency council provides additional grants and awards

Research Awards

Among the many research awards received by our residents, none is more prestigious than the UCSF Fresno Borba Housestaff Research Award.  This award is presented at graduation by the Assistant Dean for Research to the resident whose research was the most significant and meritorious during the academic year.  The last 4 annual awards were all received by Internal Medicine Residents.

Dedicated Research Elective

All residents have two weeks of research time, which can be used during their PGY2 and PGY3 years. During this time, they work with co-residents, fellows, and faculty to complete a scholarly project of their choice.

The year culminates with the Department of Medicine Research and Quality Improvement Symposium.
