Hometown
Petaluma, CA

Undergrad
University of California, Berkeley

Medical School
Stony Brook University Renaissance School of Medicine

Hobbies
Giant nerd who enjoys PC gaming, Magic the Gathering, and sci-fi novels. Also love nature, camping in the woods, and sunsets with a nice cold beer in hand.

Why Fresno?
Wanted to get back to California and was excited to be able to do residency in a large, busy county hospital serving the community backed by the resources for residency of UCSF. Also excited to be inundated with taquerias.

Carolyn Clark

Carolyn Clark, MD

Hometown
East Lansing, MI

Undergrad
Arizona State University

Medical School
University of California, San Diego School of Medicine

Hobbies
My hobbies include painting, yoga, getting lost in antique shops, watching horror movies, searching for the best sour beer in town, snuggling my cats, going on coffee dates with a good book, and taking long walks with my dog. My EM interests include medical toxicology, wilderness medicine, and harm reduction.

Why Fresno?
So many reasons! Incredible reputation and training, high acuity, tons of procedures, community vibe in an academic setting, opportunities to explore my interests through Mobile Heal and the ParkMedic program, and amazing leadership and co-residents. Plus, the proximity to Yosemite, Sequoia, LA/SF, and the ocean. What more could you ask for in a program?

Javier Guerrero

Javier Guerrero, MD

Hometown
Fillmore, CA

Undergrad
University of California, Santa Barbara

Medical School
University of California, Davis School of Medicine

Hobbies
In my free time, I enjoy both the great outdoors (e.g., hiking, snowboarding, hanging out at the beach) and the great indoors (e.g., playing PS5, binging Netflix, and lounging on the couch). I also enjoy traveling, photography, and spending time with my wife and two-year-old standard poodle.

Why Fresno?
I was drawn to UCSF-Fresno because of its high acuity, pathology variety, and reputation for great training in the ED. I was later sold during my interview and second look, where everyone was down to earth and welcoming, which made me feel that I would be well supported as a resident. I also hope to serve underserved communities during my medical career, and believe training in Fresno will train me to do so because of the health care disparities that exist in the Central Valley. Furthermore, as a first-generation Latino, I felt motivated to find a training program where I could help Spanish-speaking and migrant patients navigate their care. Finally, I have a large family network in Fresno and feel as if I would be well-supported in residency.

Ji Kang

Ji Hyun Kang, DO, MPH

Hometown
Thousand Oaks, CA

Undergrad
University of California, San Diego

Medical School
Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, California

Hobbies
I was born in South Korea and moved to California at age seven. Within EM, I am passionate about pain management and health equity especially for underserved and immigrant communities. One of my most memorable med school experiences was spending a month in rural Zambia for my MPH to train peer educators on sexual consent and teen pregnancy prevention! When I'm not in the hospital, you'll find me at concerts, walking my dog, or hunting down the best happy hour deals!

Why Fresno?
I did a sub-internship at UCSF Fresno, and that experience completely sold me. From day one, I was welcomed as part of the team and saw how committed the faculty are to both teaching and patient care. Fresno's diverse patient population, high-acuity clinical environment, and mission to serve the underserved aligned perfectly with what I was looking for in an EM program. I wanted to train at a place where I could make a meaningful impact, learn from passionate educators, and grow in a community focused setting while leveraging academic resources.

Eduardo Montoya-Perea, MD

Hometown
King City, CA

Undergrad
San Francisco State University

Medical School
San Juan Bautista School of Medicine

Hobbies
I love staying active with weight lifting, hiking, and camping trips, plus I'm always down to try new restaurants or grab food with friends. I'm really into health and wellness stuff, and I'm passionate about EMS work, wilderness medicine, and tactical emergency response. Whether I'm out on the trails or learning about the latest in emergency care, I'm all about combining my outdoor adventures with helping people when they need it most.

Why Fresno?
I chose Fresno because of the incredible experience I had as a sub intern, where the residents made me feel truly welcomed and supported from day one. The patient population in the ED reminded me of home -reflecting the same community I grew up with in the Salinas Valley. Coming from a background in agriculture and being part of a large farmworker, Spanish-speaking, and immigrant community, I see myself not just serving this population but learning and growing alongside them.

Rofida Rakha

Rofida Rakha, DO

Hometown
Los Angeles, CA

Undergrad
University of California, Los Angeles

Medical School
A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Arizona

Hobbies
When I'm not in the hospital, I enjoy traveling, hiking, exploring different food/coffee/matcha spots, going on a walk or run on the beach and rewarding myself with açaí afterwards, and watching a high-stakes soccer or basketball game. When I'm traveling, I love doing activities like ATV riding, jet skiing, and zip lining (despite having questionable swimming skills and a fear of heights). When I'm at home, I enjoy a good HIIT workout class and hanging out with friends and family. My interests within EM include global health, sports medicine, and social EM.

Why Fresno?
I did a sub-internship at UCSF Fresno and absolutely fell in love with the program and its strong teaching culture. I worked with a few of the R2s during my first week and was so impressed by their clinical knowledge and overall efficiency in the department. Their confidence so early on in their training spoke volumes about the quality of the program and truly made me excited for the opportunity to train here.

Cristian Torres

Cristian Torres, MD

Hometown

Turlock, CA

Undergrad

Stanford University

Medical School

Keck School of Medicine of USC

Hobbies
Within EM, I'm interested in social EM, education, and pain. Outside of the hospital, I enjoy traveling and seeking new experiences. I especially love trying out different cultural cuisines and trying to recreate them at home. I love to hike and be in nature. When I'm home, I watch anime, read fantasy and sci-fi novels, play video games, cook, and hang out with the twins (my mini poodles).

Why Fresno?
I was born and raised in the Central Valley, so coming to train here is like coming home. I had heard about the stellar reputation of the program through leadership at my medical school but was blown away when I came for my sub-i. Seriously a great learning environment, supportive community, and a rewarding experience throughout.

Anna Wiese

Anna Wiese, MD

Hometown
Redwood Valley

Undergrad
University of California, Los Angeles

Medical School
University of California, Davis School of Medicine

Hobbies
In my free time, I love backpacking, skiing, gardening, baking, hosting board game nights with friends, and discovering new coffee shops around town. Professional interests include health policy and advocacy, social EM, addiction medicine, and wilderness medicine.

Why Fresno?
As a fourth-year medical student rotating at UCSF Fresno, I was impressed by the skill and dedication of the residents and program culture, where everyone I encountered was truly invested in my growth and education. I chose UCSF Fresno because it is a mission-driven program dedicated to caring for a diverse and medically underserved population across a broad geographic region. The combination of community and academic training, along with the program's high volume, high acuity, and wide-ranging pathology, provides exceptional preparation to confidently practice in any clinical setting.

Maosong Ye, MD, PhD

Hometown
Shanghai, China/Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Undergrad
Shanghai University

Medical School
University of Iowa, Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine

Hobbies
My hobbies include CrossFit, Yoga, traveling, hiking, outdoor stuff, and trying out all kinds of food. For professional interests, I'm open to anything. I'll take time to explore during 4 years of residency. I'm also interested in innovation in the medical field.

Why Fresno?
I have asked multiple medical students who did rotations there, current residents and attendings who were trained there. Their approval and love for the program make me fully trust its training quality and culture. The national parks nearby are also a big driver for me to choose this program.
