Global Health (GH) is an area of medicine that allows learning and practice in the clinical, public health and research spheres to address inequities for underserved communities worldwide. The most recent pandemic helped us recognize how connected humans are regardless of the differences in geography, culture and political systems. It also highlighted the importance of developing a broader perspective to provide healthcare in underserved communities and learning from each other for the sake of advancing health equity and justice for all.
To achieve this goal, UCSF Fresno FCM has partnered with a world-renowned GH training program called the Health, Equity, Action and Leadership (HEAL) Initiative to help our learners become part of a larger like-minded global community of healthcare providers. The values that are co-shared by our two organizations include a mission to transform systems through training and developing a vision-driven healthcare workforce.
The residency candidates to our three-year family medicine residency program can also choose to be interviewed and chosen for the fourth-year learning through two different global health fellowships. These 1-year fellowships are uniquely designed to foster growth in areas of your interest but also directed towards addressing the needs of resource-denied populations both locally and globally.
