Why UCSF-Fresno EM?

Growing up in a small desert town, where most of my family still resides, I wanted to do my residency in a place that felt like home, and Fresno fits the bill. I spent a month on a rotation in the ED at CRMC and I enjoyed meeting and caring for the people of this community! Additionally, I felt right at home with the entire staff as they were all very supportive and I am happy that I get to be a part of this incredible team.

Hobbies: spending time with my dog, exploring the California coast, playing volleyball, traveling on credit card points, spending time in green spaces, going to cafés, cooking for others, eating out, lifting and being active, camping, going on road trips, and listening to 80s music.

Facts: I worked as a registered nurse prior to and during medical school. I'm also an alum of the UCB-UCSF Joint Medical Program through which I earned a research-focused M.S. in Health and Medical Sciences through UC Berkeley School of Public Health.

Interests: health justice, antiracism, quality and systems improvement, social and geriatric EM, global health, disaster medicine, and medical education, and mentorship, especially for those also underrepresented in medicine.

Why UCSF-Fresno EM?

I've spent almost my whole life in the SF Bay Area and wanted to embark on a new adventure in a different region for my residency training. I was drawn to UCSF Fresno for many reasons: its excellent clinical and procedural training in one of the busiest emergency departments in the country, the wide breadth of pathology while serving a largely underserved patient population, and the warm, collegial atmosphere within the department. The unparalleled access to vibrant fresh produce, proximity to some of the world's best national parks, and a more relaxed pace of living make the area extra special.

I'm honored to be training here to become the most compassionate and competent emergency physician I can be!

Zoe Castro - EM Class of 2030

Zoee Castro, MD

Hometown | Elko, NV

Undergrad
University of Nevada, Reno

Medical School
University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine

Hobbies
When I'm not in the hospital, you can usually find me playing pickleball with my husband, reading on my Kindle, or taking our Goldendoodle, Rosie, for a walk. I love baking (my pumpkin chocolate chip cookies are a favorite among family and friends!), and my husband and I enjoy discovering local restaurants, coffee shops, and food trucks together. Within medicine, my professional interests include medical education, advocacy, and social emergency medicine.

Why UCSF-Fresno EM?

After completing my sub-internship at UCSF Fresno, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was where I belonged. Throughout my rotation, I felt genuinely supported and encouraged by everyone I worked with from the attendings and residents to the nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the care team. It was clear that people were invested not only in patient care, but also in the growth and success of learners. Working alongside the PGY-4 residents, I also admired their confidence, clinical expertise, and ability to lead during high-acuity situations. Whether managing a critical patient or running a resuscitation, they embodied the type of emergency physician I hope to become. The opportunity to care for an underserved community while training in a high-volume, high-acuity environment is also incredibly meaningful to me. Overall, I believe Fresno will help shape me into a skilled, adaptable physician who is prepared to care for any patient population and serve any community!

Liam Field

Liam Field, MD

Hometown | Portland, Oregon

Undergrad
Western Washington University

Medical School
Tulane University School of Medicine

Hobbies
Pretty classic to EM- I pretty much love anything that's active, outside, and gets the heart pumping. I love skiing, surfing, biking, running, and all those cliché activities. Lesser known, I'm a total basketball nerd. I love watching the NBA and even though it's been a bit of a rough stretch the Portland Trail Blazers are my team! I used to have a sports encyclopedia that I would read every morning as a kiddo if that tells you how much of a fan I am.

Why UCSF-Fresno EM?

Leaving the interview I remember immediately calling my mom and girlfriend and telling them that Fresno is where people go to be the best doctor possible! Everyone during interview day was so kind, engaging, and thoughtful. I came away deeply impressed and excited about all of the opportunities to get excellent clinical exposure and the ample opportunities to get involved with wilderness med through the park program.

Jameson Krauthammer - EM Class of 2030

Jameson Krauthammer, DO

Hometown | Fresno, CA

Undergrad

Hobbies
I have a passion for anything on wheels (mostly project cars, motorcycles, and mountain biking.) I also enjoy skiing, playing soccer, and watching F1/GT3 racing. My mini Aussie, Summer, keeps me busy on my days off. Professionally, I am passionate about EMS, ED operations/admin, event medicine, and teaching.

Why UCSF-Freson EM?

I always saw myself returning to the Central Valley to serve the community I grew up in. I worked in EMS here prior to medical school and saw the volume, acuity, and unique challenges of this region firsthand. I knew training here would prepare me for any subspecialty field or practice environment. It was easy to see the enthusiasm and passion that faculty and residents have for this program/community, and that was also an important factor for me.

Cesar Martinez - EM Class of 2030

Cesar Martinez, MD, MS

Hometown | Fontana, CA

Undergrad
University of California, Los Angeles

Medical School
University of California, San Fransico School of Medicine

Hobbies
Weightlifting and running (with a progressive house soundtrack most of the time). I'll occasionally read a book if the stars align. Currently learning Portuguese, mostly so I can order pao de queijo with confidence. Stress relief takes the form of baking sweets and losing hours to competitive strategy games. Professionally, I'm interested in tons of topics, including medical education, health policy, and space medicine!

Why UCSF-Fresno EM?

I did a third-year clerkship at UCSF Fresno and loved the experience. I want to be the kind of physician who can handle anything thrown at them, and this program has the volume and procedural exposure to build that confidence. The patient population also drew me in deeply. As a native Spanish speaker, I want to care for communities where that actually matters day to day. I also reached out to residents and students who had rotated there and was impressed by how much people love it here. The proximity to national parks and having family close by sealed the deal.

Equally as important, I wanted to train at a program that provided care for a truly underserved patient population. With the great pathology and exposure to all things EM, close knit family environment of the program, grateful patient population, and added bonus of being within a couple hours of world class outdoors - Fresno is an easy choice!

My partner and I love trying new food places. We like to pretend we're food critics but only tell our reviews to each other. I also enjoy a variety of activities such as video games, board games, movies, riding my bike, hiking trails in terrible shoes and hanging out with good people. When I'm chilling indoors, you'll always find my orange cat Monty close by.

Why UCSF-Fresno EM?

I heard about UCSF Fresno from my home institution and so I did a sub-I here to check it out. The high praise was clearly not fabricated. The people are awesome, the training is incredible. Easy to say Fres-Yes to that.

Darlene Tran - EM Class 2030

Darlene Tran, MD

Hometown | San Jose, CA

When I'm not in the ED, I'm usually outside exploring. I love hiking, visiting National Parks, and collecting Junior Ranger badges wherever I go. I'm also a novice rock climber and birdwatcher. At home, I enjoy gardening and spending time with my two cats and dog. I'm always on the hunt for antiques and have an unexpected talent for making animal balloons.

Why UCSF-Fresno EM?

I chose UCSF Fresno EM after completing a fourth-year rotation here and immediately feeling at home. The supportive culture, exceptional learning environment, and camaraderie among residents and faculty made it a place where I could truly see myself thriving. I was drawn to the opportunity to care for a diverse and medically underserved patient population from a wide range of geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, while gaining experience with high-acuity pathology. UCSF Fresno's outstanding reputation for training, combined with opportunities to pursue my interests in medical education, made it the perfect fit for me.

Kelly Wucherer - EM Class 2030

Kelly Wucherer, MD

Hometown | Woodinville, WA

Undergrad
Whitworth University

Medical School
University of Washington School of Medicine

Hobbies
I will try anything at least once, but I love playing soccer, enjoying the outdoors from a trail or in a canoe, reading historical fiction, and a tough jigsaw puzzle.

Why UCSF-Fresno EM?

I was encouraged by a mentor in medical school not to dismiss UCSF Fresno based solely on its location, and I am grateful that I took that advice. In addition to providing rigorous training in the emergency department, the program offers numerous opportunities to further explore my interests within Emergency Medicine.

Most importantly, I felt free to be my authentic self throughout the interview process and could envision myself as an intern at UCSF Fresno. On a personal level, I feel a connection to my roots in the Central Valley. When my grandparents first immigrated to the United States, they worked in the citrus fields outside of Visalia. Lastly, I cannot wait to eat the world's best oranges straight from the tree!
