140.32. EM Ultrasound at UCSF Fresno. (6 units)
The emergency ultrasound medical student elective is a four-week elective designed to introduce students to the use of point of care ultrasound in the emergency department. Students will receive hands-on training as well as a variety of didactics to learn the basics of emergency ultrasound. Students will be given required readings and lectures to help develop background knowledge of each of six main areas of emergency ultrasound including EFAST, aorta, biliary, cardiac, pelvic, and procedural. Further, they will be given autonomy to practice and develop their ultrasound skills, scanning patients both with real time supervision and independently. Images and videos will be saved electronically for later review at quality assurance meetings once per week.
- Discuss the indications of point of care ultrasound in the emergency department.
- List the standard view or “windows” for each of six primary areas of emergency ultrasound – trauma, aorta, biliary, cardiac, pelvic, and procedural.
- Interpret point of care ultrasounds.
- Demonstrate the standard views or “windows” for each of six primary areas of emergency ultrasound – trauma, aorta, biliary, cardiac, pelvic, and procedural.
- Identify areas for practice based improvement through participation in the emergency medicine quality assurance program.
- The student must be a third or fourth-year medical student.
- The student must be in good standing and have the support of his or her medical school.
- Preference will be given to students who have completed a one-month emergency medicine rotation.
- Completion of the emergency ultrasound pretest.
- Completion of the required readings.
- Completion of the pelvic ultrasound tutorial and test.
- Attendance at a 4-hour orientation/scanning shift.
- 14 8-hour scanning shifts
- Two shifts per week must be supervised by Dr. Bengiamin
- The remainder of your shifts must be supervised by Dr. Bengiamin, Dr. Chooljian, Dr. Chinnock, or ultrasound area of concentration residents.
- Attendance at a once per week quality assurance meeting to review your studies and receive feedback. Lectures will also be given at that time.
- Two written case reports with images/video to be submitted at the conclusion of the rotation.
- Completion of the emergency ultrasound posttest.
- Attendance at the emergency medicine conferences.
Scheduling
The rotation is offered and scheduled on an individual basis beginning August of 2009.
