Do you know a high school junior interested in researching a diseased brain, learning about the human genome study, studying genetics through zebra fish, or mapping genes in plants? If so, be sure that he/she applies for the University of California, San Francisco, Fresno Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program (UCSF Fresno SBI). In its sixteenth year, high school juniors from Fresno, Madera, Merced, Kings, Tulare and Mariposa counties have participated in the past. The deadline to apply is February 28, 2002.
Selected students will work with UCSF Fresno faculty from June through August 2002 on a variety of medical and science based research projects ranging from surgery reconstruction to alteration of gene expression to public health. Every participant is awarded a stipend, thanks in part to the generosity of the Bertha and John Garabedian Charitable Foundation.
In the past 16 years, more than 120 students have participated in UCSF Fresno’s SBI program. In addition to conducting research projects, SBI students visit UCSF in San Francisco and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and observe surgery and tour University Medical Center’s level-one trauma and emergency departments.
The selection process begins in March and is based on academic merit, questionnaire responses and teachers’ letters of recommendation.
