UCSF Fresno is accepting applications from students for biomedical research internships

FRESNO – UCSF Fresno Medical Education and Research Program is accepting applications for its 26th Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program (SBI), which offers Central San Joaquin Valley high school students first-hand experiences with careers in medicine and biomedical research. Students entering their senior year of high school from Fresno, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced and Tulare counties are eligible to apply.

Selected students will work with UCSF Fresno faculty members from June 2013 through the beginning of August 2013 on a variety of research projects in the Fresno area. Last year, nine students were assigned to research projects involving breast cancer, cell culture, pulmonary hypertension, renal cell carcinoma, and fibroadenomas.

In addition to conducting research, students in the SBI visit the University of California, San Francisco campus as well as observe a surgical procedure at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

More than 200 high-achieving students have graduated from the program, which began in 1988. Many of the students are now health professionals working in the Central San Joaquin Valley, including doctors, pharmacists and nurses.

Students are selected based on academic merit, questionnaire responses, interviews and letters of recommendation from their teachers. There is no cost to students to participate in the program.

Scholarships may be available for qualifying students to help offset transportation costs. The UCSF Fresno Summer Biomedical Internship Program is funded by Cal Viva Health and Cook Land Company.

The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 at 5 p.m.  To obtain an application or for more information, please visit http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/sbi/ or call (559) 499-6423, email  [email protected]
