UCSF FRESNO GRADUATES CLASS OF 2007 RESIDENT PHYSICIANS

FRESNO – The UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program will graduate 65 resident physicians in a ceremony to be held Thursday, June 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Copper River Country Club (11500 North Friant Road) in Fresno. A social hour for the graduates, their families and friends and UCSF Fresno faculty and staff members will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Thirty of the graduates are expected to stay in the Fresno vicinity and Central Valley to care for area residents.

Among them:

  • Cyrus Buhari, DO, of Stockton, will enter the UCSF Fresno Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program.
  • Angela Grasser, MD, who attended high school in Lemoore, is staying to practice family and community medicine at Orange Cove Clinic.
  • Eight of the 10 resident physicians graduating in pediatrics are remaining in the Valley. Five are staying on at Children’s Hospital Central California.

“Growing up in the Valley, I worked as a medical assistant in a clinic in Riverdale,” said Grasser. “That’s where I formed my first impression of what a doctor does. That’s what I know and that’s what I will continue to do.”

“UCSF Fresno’s contribution to the community is evident each year,” said Joan Voris, MD, associate dean at UCSF Fresno. “About 30 percent of our graduates remain in the area to provide much needed health care services. It is particularly pleasing this year to have nearly half of them staying.”

Graduation highlights include:

  • Welcome remarks by Joan Voris, MD, Associate Dean, UCSF Fresno
  • Graduation address by Greg W. Hendey, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, UCSF Fresno
  • Presentation of the prestigious Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching. Of the four Kaiser awards presented by the UCSF School of Medicine, one is given to an outstanding faculty member in the Fresno program.
  • Other awards include: Outstanding First-Year Resident, Outstanding Resident Teacher, Outstanding Attending Teacher, Outstanding Non-Physician Teacher, Borba Award for Outstanding Research, and the Dizon Community Service Award.
