FRESNO – The UCSF Fresno Caruthers High School Doctors Academy will celebrate its third graduating class Tuesday, May 1, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm in the gymnasium at Caruthers High School (2580 W. Tahoe Street) in Caruthers.
The 2012 graduating class consists of 18 students. Thirteen will attend four-year universities. Four will attend community colleges. One student enlisted in the United States Navy.
During the ceremony, the “UCSF School of Dentistry Pre-Dental Scholars Award” will be presented to one Doctors Academy graduate. The award offers Doctors Academy students special consideration for the UCSF School of Dentistry upon completion of undergraduate course work and admissions requirements.
Caruthers Doctors Academy students will receive scholarships from local community sponsors including, Caruthers Raisin Packing, Gurdev Singh Gill Memorial, Kiwanis Club of Caruthers, and United Security Bank.
The Doctors Academy is an academic preparation program sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research. The program seeks to encourage and prepare students for careers in health and medicine.
In 2007, two rural Doctors Academy sites were developed and implemented. One was established at Caruthers High School and another at Selma High School. Thanks to funding provided by the Health Career Opportunity Program, The California Endowment, The California Wellness Foundation, and Kaiser Permanente Fresno, continued expansion of the Doctors Academy has enabled 98 Caruthers High School students to participate in the program to date.
