UCSF Fresno and Susan G. Komen® Northern and Central California to Offer No-Cost Breast Screenings and Mammograms on May 19

FRESNO –Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women in the U.S. About one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

UCSF Fresno and Susan G. Komen® Northern and Central California will hold a breast health education, screening and mammogram event on Saturday, May 19, at the UCSF Fresno Center for Medical Education and Research, 155 N. Fresno St. in downtown Fresno.

Ibironke Adelaja, MD, FACS, an assistant clinical professor at UCSF Fresno envisioned the event and brought numerous partners together to make it possible. Dr. Adelaja is a breast surgeon, who specializes in caring for women and men with benign and malignant breast diseases. 

“Breast cancer incidence and deaths vary greatly by ethnicity, socio-economic status and even geographical location,” said Adelaja. “Early detection and treatment are extremely important. Simply put, they save lives and that’s the motivation for this event.”

“Komen Northern and Central California is pleased to partner with UCSF Fresno, Life Saving Images, Inc., and other community organizations to offer breast health education,  screenings and mammograms to Fresno area residents, and in some instances at no cost to the patient” said Sharon Johnson, two-time breast cancer survivor and Director of Mission and Grants in Fresno.  “This event is part of our Bold Gold Tour to reduce breast cancer deaths by 50 percent by 2026.”

Participants must meet the following criteria:

  • 40 years of age or older
  • No mammogram within past year
  • Must have a primary care physician or establish one the day of the event

Additional details:

  • Low-income may qualify for a no-cost screening and mammogram
  • A clinical breast exam may be completed prior to the mammogram
  • Event organizers are unable to accept Kaiser and Covered California at this time
  • Wellness activities and refreshments will be provided
