First Endocrinology Fellow is Set to Graduate and Join Faculty at UCSF Fresno

Mandeep K. Gill, DO

Mandeep K. Gill, DO, originally from Bellingham, Washington, is the first fellow to graduate from UCSF Fresno’s Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship. She will be among the approximately 100 residents and fellows completing training at UCSF Fresno this year. After graduation, she is joining the faculty in the Endocrinology fellowship program as part of Inspire Health Medical Group.

Dr. Gill is staying at UCSF Fresno because of the unparallelled opportunity to work with diverse patient populations and the wide spectrum of pathology and health conditions encountered at UCSF Fresno’s clinical affiliate sites.

“I look forward to deepening my clinical experience and working closely with medical students and residents,” she said. “I am especially excited to continue working and learning alongside my mentors.”

The two-year ACGME-accredited Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship at UCSF Fresno provides comprehensive training in all aspects of diabetes and endocrine diseases. Diabetes is one of the health conditions known as endocrine disorders that prevent the endocrine system from working properly.  A UCLA Center for Health Policy Research study estimated that almost half of Fresno County adults (49%) have pre-diabetes.

Fellows in the program train at the Veterans Administration Central California Healthcare System hospital in Fresno for inpatient and outpatient training, Inspire Health Medical Group’s University Diabetes and Endocrine Specialists Clinic, and at United Health Center’s ambulatory care clinic in Fresno, beginning later this summer.

Dr. Gill was the first fellow accepted into the program in 2023.

She chose endocrinology because of its systems-based approach, longitudinal patient care and complexity and nuance involved with managing hormonal and metabolic disorders.

Intrigued by medicine from a young age, she often accompanied her parents, whose native language is Punjabi, to their medical appointments to help interpret. These early experiences sparked an interest in health care, which continued to deepen.

As the first in her family to pursue higher education, much of her educational journey required figuring things out on her own, but she was fortunate to find mentors along the way.

Dr. Gill earned a bachelor’s degree at Western Washington University, a medical degree at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, Washington, and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at UCSF Fresno.

“Becoming an endocrinologist is a milestone I am incredibly proud of,” Dr. Gill said. “It reflects not only the years of intense training and dedication but also the strength it took to balance that journey with becoming a mother. This moment is the culmination of resilience and the unwavering support of those who stood by me.”
