James W. Davis, MD, FACS, is a Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, Fresno regional campus and serves as UCSF Fresno's Chief of Surgery. In 2012, he was appointed the Steven N. Parks, MD, Endowed Chair of Surgery at UCSF Fresno.
Dr. Davis earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He completed a surgical internship at Highland General Hospital in Oakland, California, followed by a general surgery residency at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. He then completed a trauma fellowship at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Davis is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, with added qualifications in Surgical Critical Care.
From 2007 to 2023, Dr. Davis served as Chief of Trauma at Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC). During his tenure, he led CRMC through verification as a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma—the first such verification in Fresno County. He also served as the inaugural Chair of the Central California Regional Trauma Coordinating Committee (CRTCC) and continues to collaborate with hospitals across a five-county region to improve and standardize trauma care. Several CRTCC initiatives have been recognized as best practices by the State Trauma Advisory Committee.
Dr. Davis has a longstanding interest in intimate partner violence and domestic violence and has presented on these topics at local, regional, and national meetings since 2008. He also serves as Section Chair for Intimate Partner Violence on the American College of Surgeons Best Practice Guidelines Committee.
Dr. Davis has served as Chair of the American College of Surgeons Northern California Committee on Trauma, President of the Western Trauma Association, and Vice President of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. He is also President of the Trauma Education and Research Foundation of Fresno and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Trauma.
