UCSF Fresno is a regional campus of the UC San Francisco School of Medicine. Our focus is on improving health through medical education, patient care, research and community partnerships. We are the largest academic physician-training program in between San Francisco and Los Angeles and provide an experience unlike anywhere else with a wide variety of practices and settings from rural hospitals and clinics, health agencies and programs, faculty physicians’ offices to remote wilderness settings to one of California’s busiest emergency rooms and the region’s only Level 1 trauma and burn center and much more.

The Acute Care Surgery Fellowship encompasses both trauma and non-trauma surgical emergencies, as well as surgical critical care. Fellows are involved in all aspects of patient care, from initial evaluation through discharge, providing experience in comprehensive critical care management. Through this integrated educational experience, fellows will learn to become leaders in acute care surgery.

The UCSF Fresno Acute Care/Trauma Surgery Physician Assistant (PA) Residency Program affiliated with the UCSF School of Medicine is offering a twelve-month surgical residency program that provides intense training in the perioperative and operative management of patients. PA Residents will develop critical thinking and surgical assistant skills throughout the year. Residents can expect to gain the fundamentals of surgical care through both didactic and clinical settings in a multitude of surgery subspecialties to best prepare for a career in surgery.

The goal of this program is to provide dentists, technicians, hygienists, students and other dental professionals the opportunity to participate in locally based continuing education seminars needed to maintain professional licenses. The Continuing Dental Education Program is a community based partnership between Central San Joaquin Valley dentists and the University of California, San Francisco, Medical School Program.

The Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant (PA) Residency program is an 18 month postgraduate program that accepts two PA trainees per year. Our curriculum is based on the Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine and the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (SEMPA) Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Postgraduate Training Program Standards. This program places a strong emphasis on clinical teaching and hands-on training while PA trainees learn and work alongside physician residents during their clinical and didactic training.

Our Emergency Medicine residency program was founded in 1974 and is one of the oldest and most respected in the country. We serve a large and diverse patient population from urban, suburban, rural and wilderness settings in California’s Central Valley. Our ED at Community Regional Medical Center serves >113,000 patients per year, and we see the highest volume of trauma patients of any Level 1 Trauma Center in California.
Emergency Ultrasound (Fellowship)
Emergency Ultrasound
The patients seen in our emergency department provide a rich source of clinically appropriate ultrasound material. We see many patients with indications for emergency ultrasound. Ultrasound is routinely used in our ED to evaluate trauma patients for free intraperitoneal fluid on FAST scans. The results are often key to the further plan of management and evaluation of the patient by the trauma team. ED ultrasound has on many occasions rapidly indicated the best direction of management and care of our patients with problems such as those with abdominal aortic aneurysms, pericardial tamponade, ectopic pregnancy, cardiac arrest, and many other immediate time sensitive situations.

The UCSF Fresno Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship is a new, two-year program that is accredited by the ACGME. Our program provides comprehensive training for fellows in all aspects of diabetes and endocrine disease, caring for a diverse patient population in the San Joaquin Valley and Central California.

The UCSF Fresno Family Medicine Residency is a dynamic program which has graduated more than 400 residents since its inception in 1970. It is a model for community-based training, balancing service and education needs for a large multi-cultural underserved population.
Gastroenterology (Fellowship)

Our program provides comprehensive training in gastroenterology, hepatology, and endoscopic procedures. Our fellows are exposed to an exceptionally diverse patient population with a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Fellows also receive dedicated training in transplant hepatology in their UCSF main campus rotations. Our program also offers trainees ample exposure in biliary and advanced therapeutic endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound. Our program is committed to promoting clinical research that focuses on improving patient care and all fellows are expected to undertake in clinical research and quality improvement projects.

The UCSF Fresno Hematology Oncology Fellowship Program was founded in 2016. Graduates of our program attain the professional, attitudinal, cognitive, and technical skills necessary to provide their patients with kind and compassionate care.

The inpatient/outpatient Hepatology Fellowship Program introduces the fellow to inpatient/outpatient management of patients with the wide range of acute and chronic liver diseases. The fellow will participate with increasing involvement, depending on the level of experience, in evaluation and treatment of patients with hepatological problems requiring hospitalization.

The one-year Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) fellowship is an integral part of the fully accredited Family Medicine Residency Program. The HPM program director, Dr. Alireza Soleimani Fard, and other palliative-care trained physicians work with a team of specialists to provide a comprehensive approach to training in hospice care.

The Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at UCSF Fresno offers comprehensive clinical training and research opportunities in one of the largest medical centers in Central California. Two highly qualified physicians are offered positions in our program annually. Training takes place at Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) and the VA Central California Health Care System. CRMC is home to one of California’s busiest emergency departments and the only Level 1 trauma center and burn unit between Sacramento and Los Angeles. Fellows care for a diverse patient population and encounter an extraordinary array of pathologies.

The one-year Maternal Child Health Fellowship Program (MCH) is a collaboration between the Family Medicine and Obstetrics/Gynecology Residency programs at UCSF Fresno. The fellowship is aimed at providing an extended spectrum of training in maternity and newborn care designed for the family physician. Fellows participate fully in the care of their patients and receive hands-on training in operative delivery, high-risk antepartum care and care of the ill newborn.

Our accredited academic program blends evidence-based clinical training, in-vivo and laboratory based simulation, research, and formal didactic educational experiences to prepare graduates for private practice, academic positions, or subspecialty fellowships. We are a branch campus and major teaching site of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, teaching 3rd year OB/GYN clerkships as well as 4th year elective students in general OB/GYN as well as maternal and fetal medicine. Our faculty members hold appointments at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, and have received numerous awards for distinction in teaching.

The UCSF Fresno Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program is a four-year program, fully accredited and approved by the American Dental Association, and currently have a house staff of 16 residents (four residents per year). Our parent hospital, Community Regional Medical Center, is the only Level 1 Trauma Center serving Central California and also has the largest and one of the busiest emergency departments in the state.

Affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, we offer a 12 month postgraduate program for 2 PA orthopedic surgery residents per year. Graduates who successfully complete the residency will receive a certificate of completion from UCSF. Orthopaedic Surgery PA residents will learn and work alongside physician residents during their clinical and didactic training. The program will feature a strong emphasis on clinical teaching, surgical skills and hands-on learning. The goal of our PA residency is to provide extensive orthopaedic surgery patient management skills that will help propel graduates into successful future careers in both academic and private practice settings.

The UCSF Fresno Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program received initial accreditation in June of 2009. Our inaugural class began their training in June 2010. This is an exciting time for us, as this new residency program brings another dimension to the multitude of already well-established surgical and non-surgical training programs here at UCSF Fresno.

The Parkmedic program provides the emergency medicine residents at UCSF Fresno the unique opportunity to become EMS medical directors (under faculty supervision) for the EMS providers of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (SEKI). Residents voluntarily participate in this program usually starting in the PGY 2 year.

Pharmacy
The pharmacy education program provides pharmacy students at the UCSF School of Pharmacy with advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs), or advanced rotations, in Fresno, CA. As part of the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) curricula, pharmacy students are required to complete advanced rotations in their final year of pharmacy school. Students electing to complete these rotations in Fresno spend the last 12 months of pharmacy school in the heart of the Central Valley working alongside other health care providers in a variety of different health care settings to serve a diverse patient population.

Our teaching faculty is dedicated to clinical training for residents and medical students, taking full advantage of the personalized learning environment that exists at UCSF Fresno. We offer an extensive and comprehensive didactic curriculum, dedicating 5 hours per week in each year of training to seminars integrating Biopsychiatry, Psychopharmacology, Psychodynamics, Psychotherapy, and Subspecialty Topics.

Our three-year ACGME-accredited Pulmonary Disease/Critical Care Fellowship Program welcomed its first class in 2007. It is a program within the Department of Internal Medicine and exists in conjunction with the fully-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program and seventeen other fellowships at UCSF Fresno.

The UCSF Fresno Sleep Medicine Fellowship is a one-year program and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Training will take place at University Sleep and Pulmonary Associates, Family Health Care Network, Community regional Medical Center and Anther Pediatrics Sleep Center. The program is aimed at providing fellows with knowledge and expertise in the clinical care of a wide array of sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, circadian rhythm disorders and insomnia, as well as becoming proficient in the interpretation of sleep studies.

The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship program is an ACGME/RRC accredited training program, offered through the University of San Francisco Fresno, Department of Surgery. This one year fellowship is based out of Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) in Fresno, California.
Wilderness Medicine (Fellowship)
Wilderness Medicine
This 0.6 FTE clinical duties schedule affords the fellow plenty of time to participate in required curricular activities that develop the cognitive knowledge and skill sets expected of a Wilderness Medicine Fellow, as well as time to complete a research or scholarly project expected of all Fellows. A wide variety of experiences are available during the fellowship, yet the curriculum is designed to be flexible to allow each individual the opportunity to explore the areas of wilderness medicine that interest them the most.
